We are facing a lot of problems. Poverty. Racial injustice. Economic inequality. And, what’s it called, oh yeah, the constant threat of Nuclear War.
There is another problem that is now the subject of raging debate. It ranks somewhere in-between the survival of civilization and the winner of the NBA Eastern Division. It is the problem of what to do with Andrew Cuomo.
A torrent of allegations are showering over the head of both Andrew and, correspondingly, his brother Chris. They all involve Andrew. After all, he is the Governor of New York. Chris is a talking head with his own show on CNN every night. Of course, Chris has more power, but Andrew is apparently the bigger jerk.
Let’s first look at the Gov’s love life. There is no point in my stating the number of sexual harassment charges that have been made. Between the time I type this sentence and the time I type the next sentence, there will probably be three or four more.
I must preface what I am about to say regarding those allegations by making it clear that I have never been a woman. I cannot then relate to how a woman feels when being confronted by the actions that Governor Andy may have taken. I must also assert that I have never felt offended by any sexual overtures made to me by a woman. The few times that this has happened, I have welcomed it. So, I may not be the best judge of the merits of the charges that Randy Andy is facing. That being understood, here’s what I think.
To me, the charges vary in seriousness. I say “serious” under the new “Me-Too” standards. They vary from an unidentified staff member who says Casanova Cuomo reached under her blouse and fondled her; to another being kissed on the lips and asked to play strip poker; to him putting his hand on another’s lower back then on her cheeks and asking to kiss her; to another being asked her about her love life and whether she had ever had sex with older men; to another being kissed her on her hand, asked whether she had a boyfriend, being called “sweetheart”, being hugged and kissed on both cheeks and his putting his arm around her back; and, finally, another says that she was given an “overly long hug.”
As a non-woman, I suppose I should not be judgmental about these things. But, the hell with that. Other than the under the blouse fondling charge, which has to be tempered by its anonymity, I see these incidents as silly at best, creepy at worst. What it surely displays is Handsy Andy’s much reported abrasive and egotistical personality. He is an asshole.
However, that’s only the sexual stuff. Then, there’s the virus stuff. Much worse. It appears with more validity than any of the harassment allegations, that the hero of the Covid Era was a liar and a fraud. He misrepresented the number of deaths at New York Rest Homes and while doing so, even wrote a book about what a wonderful a job he was doing. Disgusting. Again, the stuff that assholes do.
Chris enters the picture for two reasons. Both related to his asshole of a brother. First, Governor Perv allowed him to get Covid tests before they were generally available. Second, Chris the “Journalist” gave his brother an open door to appear on his show and crow about how wonderfully he was handling the crisis – a crowing that we now learn was unearned. And now, “Journalist” Chris tells us that he will not discuss the charges against his brother on his show because he is too close to the subject. So, to Pulitzer Cuomo, it was good journalism to promote his brother and it is bad journalism to criticize him. “Let’s Get After It” indeed. Maybe this is Chris’s idea, but I can’t help but think he is following his controlling brother’s orders.
Leo Durocher said that “nice guys finish last.” That is sometimes true. However, it is also sometimes true that assholes with power abuse that power and eventually get their come-uppance. Once a crack in their armor appears, it’s like a crack in your car window, it just expands and grows as those who have been put upon by the asshole now seize the chance to pile on with retribution.
Grandee Andy is having his day in the barrel. Payback’s a bitch.
