At first blush, two of the main stories in this week’s news have nothing in common. I speak of the Epstein files and the sad kidnapping of Savannah Guthrie‘s mother. On another level, however, they are delivering much the same message – the world is different for the rich and famous.
Of course, we always knew this. But, there are some occasions when that reality is forced upon us in an uncomfortable way. The Epstein files are a clear example of that. We see the atrocious behavior of the ruling elite as evidenced by the material that has been disclosed so far, and we have hardly seen all of it. Nothing can rival the abhorrence of the sexual perversion itself, but the devious willingness of the powerful to enrich and benefit themselves, regardless of any moral or ethical constraints comes close.
Most importantly, they have been and continue to be getting away with it.
So where does the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie play into this? Certainly not because of any misbehavior on the part of the Guthries. The tragedy they are being forced to live through is harrowing and deserves the sympathy of everyone.
But, Savannah Guthrie is rich and famous and because she is rich and famous, her mother‘s case is being treated differently than others. Her case is garnering more attention and more public resources than would be devoted to any ordinary persons.
Have you ever heard of Besalynn Mary James? Neither have I. Besalynn’s picture is right next to Nancy Guthrie’s on the FBI website of kidnapped and missing persons. Besalynn is not rich and famous. She is from the Lummi Nation Indian Reservation. CNN is not covering her disappearance. Several hundred FBI agents and County Sheriff’s Deputies are not assigned to look for Bessalynn like they are for Nancy Guthrie.
And Bessalynn Mary James is not alone. Hers’ is only one of 125 pictures on the FBI website.
At the end of 2024, according to the National Crime Information Center, there were approximately 93,000 active missing persons cases.
I certainly wish the best for the Guthrie family. I certainly hope that Nancy Guthrie is found and returned safely. I also hope the same for Bessalynn Mary James and the many thousands like her.
As has recently been demonstrated so dramatically, because the rich and famous live differently than the rest of us, the chances of success for Nancy Guthrie are much better.
