Sometimes the cavalry comes riding in from the oddest places. Is it possible that this time they were wearing MAGA hats and carrying Trump flags?
Of course, the despicable display we all saw this week is inexcusable by any measure. My point, though, is that these morons finally did what we have been waiting to see since Trump first slithered down that escalator. How many times have we said, “this is the final straw” or “now he’s gone too far” and how many times have we been wrong? We have been waiting desperately for Trump to do something that would move his sycophants into something approaching rationality. “Grab ‘em by the pussy,” didn’t do it. Tens of thousands of lies didn’t do it. His love affair with Putin didn’t do it. Now, though, the Capitol Crazies seem to have accomplished the impossible.
Shortly after the desecration of the building where they work, some of the biggest loyal loonies of the Republican right backed off their objections to the Electoral College count and said stuff that, hours before, would have been anathema to them. They talked as if they worshipped at the altar of Ralph Nadar instead of Ralph Reed. The marauders had come to the rescue.
Not that the Republican “come away-from-Jesus” moment was the least bit sincere. Lindsay “I’ll Never Come Out of the Closet” Graham was by far the most despicable. This is the Orange Menace’s asshole (so to speak) buddy. This is the guy who latched onto the reflective glory of being the President’s parasite as soon as his former host, John McCain, left him. This is the guy who had called the Secretary of State of Georgia and communicated to him the need to find more Trump votes. But, after the Capitol invasion, there he was standing and saying, in a tone wrongly implying that he had said it many times before, how obviously his BFF had lost and it was time to move on. The marauders had come to the rescue.
And then there are the spineless resignations of Cabinet members and the condemnations from former close staffers including, of all people, Bill Barr. The moral center of Bill Barr must be harder to find that Jimmy Hoffa’s body.
The magical impact of the marauders will, of course, not completely transform Trump’s troops. The hard core – the ones who made up the marauders themselves and those to whom Fox News is second only to Ecclesiastes in terms of truth-telling – they won’t be swayed. In fact, their bewildering logic will only be reinforced by the push-back that is now going on in reaction to the marauders. That’s why I worry about how hard to push. The thoughts of Impeachment, Indictment, and Twenty-Fifth amendment – all of those things are enticing, justifiable, and borderline orgasmic. But, are they what we need now? Can we talk about unity and, at the same time, jump into that divisive cesspool? I don’t know.
What I do know is that we’ve already seen some of his biggest backers back off and that if further contemplated retribution against the Inciter-in-Chief actually happens, and if it works, then the dimwits who climbed the sacred walls of the Capitol are owed a debt of our gratitude.
Funny, I said the same thing. For the wrong reason, some of the Republicans have moved to change their positions. Listening to Lyndsay Graham’s speech especially made me want to puke. What a POS.
None of the Republicans’ “change of heart” should be given any credit though. When they had the chance to convict and remove trump from office, they failed with the notable exception of Mitt Romney.
