The Trump Defense

Maybe Trump is actually a genius.  He says he is, and, not only that, he says he has “great and unmatched wisdom.” After all, has he ever lied?  Well, that might be the wrong question to ask.

Anyway, he has come up with a defense strategy. It’s one that I never thought of in my over 40 years of practicing law – don’t claim you didn’t do it; don’t even claim that you did it and you have an excuse. No, not only concede that you did it, keep doing it until everyone accepts your wrongdoing as merely commonplace.

Trump is now facing potential impeachment for soliciting political  campaign aid from a foreign government, Ukraine. That’s clearly a crime. So, what does this criminal mastermind do to exonerate himself? He explains how he did it and then goes and does it again, this time with China.  We can probably expect  a torrent of new requests from the Felon-in-Chief to a whole host of other countries. He’s only covered Europe and Asia so far.  He has yet left five full continents completely untouched.

And it won’t stop there. If this works, he has created a whole new “Get Out of Jail” card, not only for himself, but for all of us.

Next time you are stopped for speeding, when the cop asks for your license and registration, just say, “Yes, officer, I was going much too fast, and, guess what, I’m going to go even faster now.”  Then, step on the gas and pull away like you were at the starting gate at Indy.  It’s the Trump Defense.

Next time you are shopping and you see something you want but don’t feel like paying for it, just take it.  Then, when Security descends on you, proudly show the Guard what you took and, as he escorts you to his office, grab some more stuff. It’s the Trump Defense.

And, next time the IRS calls you in for an audit, don’t explain how your deductions were completely justified, admit that they were a complete fiction.  Then, in front of the auditor, scribble in a couple more, maybe claim that your kids are charities.  It’s the Trump Defense.

Wait, you mean those defenses won’t work?  You mean you will still get prosecuted?  Then, so should Trump.
