HEY, WAIT A SECOND

Of the tens of thousands of words written and said about Robert Mueller’s recent testimony, I have not seen or heard comments on a factor that I think may have influenced his investigation more than any other – our lack of patience.

If you are anything like me, I have to switch TV shows whenever a commercial comes on.  Often, I switch during the show if the action slows down. How long do you allow the car in front of you to stay there after the light turns green before you pound the horn? E-mail takes too much time. Texting is quicker and you’d better get a response within a few minutes or you feel ignored.

You get the point.  Technology has created a form of life that doesn’t  like to wait around for anything. So, what does this have to do with Mueller?  Plenty.

See, Mueller explained that he did not subpoena Trump to testify because he knew Trump would fight it and the fight would take too long to resolve. Well, just imagine how things might have been different if Mueller hadn’t felt like he had to be in such a hurry. Imagine if he had handled it like the Watergate prosecutors did 46 years ago. They lived in a time when people were more willing to wait. They didn’t care that things took a while.  We even sent letters to each other. The Watergate guys subpoenaed the tapes and they fought that subpoena to the Supreme Court. Of course, they won and this forced Tricky Dick to pack his bags.

Had Mueller pursued a subpoena, winning the inevitable fight would not have exactly been a slam dunk given the Trumpsters on the Supreme Court.  But, winning wasn’t a sure thing in Watergate either.  If Mueller won, the chances of Trump telling the truth under oath are about the same as the chances of Jeffrey Epstein winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Perjury was a gimme. And this time, Tricky Don would have been the one packing.

I can’t help but think that if we viewed time differently – if we were just a little more patient – Mueller would not have felt so forced.  The public furor over how long the investigation was taking would not have been so ardent. And the lying bastard who is now our President would soon be gone.

I tried to make this blog as short as possible because I know how people don’t like to read anything too long.

  1. My takeaway is that I can’t believe this legal icon with an untouchable resume got so old so fast and nobody even knew. He should never have been in charge of this investigation, but perhaps your party wanted Weissman in charge…
