In the Beginning

I am a child of the sixties. Actually, to be technical, the forties, but the sixties was the decade when I came of age.  It was then that I developed my outlook on things social and political. I have, for the most part, retained those views.  Unfortunately, though, I and those like me have failed to live by them. Sure, we did some worthwhile stuff. A lot of people don’t see skin color the same way that people did back then. We have same sex married couples now (my son among them). But, still, too many people wish we didn’t. Many of us have retained our anti-Vietnam attitudes and oppose a militaristic foreign policy. But, yet our country still has one.
And, if I even need to mention it, we now have an orange sociopath we call “President Donald J. Trump.

So, it is within that spirit that this blog will be written – sometimes with what I hope will be a light touch, sometimes not. My underlying philosophy is in this song I wrote some years ago.  I will spare you my singing of it.  Here are the words:

In the sixties times they were different then; We were in school and we were sure That we would never repeat again the attitudes that we abhor

We derided those who wore fancy clothes; substance mattered more than style; now in designer jeans we drive rich machines while we compare our kitchen tile

Instead of mankind’s fate it’s the interest rate; that is what we talk about Maybe we just grew up but when I lift my cup please forgive me if I shout that

We were right, but we didn’t listen to our song

We were right, now we’ve become what we thought was wrong
